Nice Map of USA
Got this for my 5 year old grandson and his 6 year old sister. As members of a military family that moves often thought it was important that they know where they were going and how far away from Grandma they were going to be. This is a very nice and sturdy map like that when you life the individual states it tells you that states capitol. Map is sturdy made of composite wood and each state is an individual piece. It is also very colorful. It is very sturdy and well made should last them a long time. Pleased with purchase.

Excellent way for blind person to learn states and capitols
Even though this puzzle is intended for children, it has another use. My blind mother wished she could remember the placement of all of the states. She said "If only they made a puzzle-like product that had all of the states which would talk when you pressed each state." I searched and searched through all the catalogs of products made for visually impared people and found nothing. Then a friend showed me the Melissa & Doug USA Map Sound Puzzle she had bought for a child. Wow! This was exactly what I was looking for. My mom found the puzzle easy to use and has spent hours with it. The voice is loud and clear. So far, she has been able to remove each piece, listen to the information, and replace it without getting "lost". The only negatives for this kind of use is that the intended use is to take all the pieces out, then put them back one-by-one. For a blind person, you have to take each piece out separately and put it back before taking the next piece out. Getting an inland state out can be a bit difficult. Also, some of the smaller states are grouped into one piece, so a blind person only can tell that the states are grouped, but can't tell how they relate geographically to each other. For its intended use as a child's puzzle, it would work fine. Just make sure your child is over the age where he or she would try to swallow a piece. They are small and can be a choking hazard.

Wasn't his favorite, but..
Would've been alot better if the sound only worked when the right puzzle piece was placed in the right position. Sometimes the sensors pick up the state you are passing over. However, he does love putting puzzles together so we will leave the sound off. Once he gets a little better at this one (he is only 3) We will use the sound more often. I would like it better if it had the state capitol printed on each state. But overall, he is still learning!

It is great for elementary age kids.
When several smaller states are on one puzzle piece they list/say all the capitals and states. I wondered about that before I bought this puzzle. Some of the place names are mispronounced. I don't know if that is a technical problem or if other regions pronounce SD's capital different than we do. There was one other, but I can't remember which capital it was. It does exactly what I bought it for--hands-on beginning USA geography while I am changing a diaper or fixing lunch.

States map
Bought this map puzzle for my granddaughter as she is going into grade 3. Figured she could use it during the summer. She loved it and I hope will share it with her younger twin brothers. I have not seen the puzzle as it was sent directly to her; but the brand name hold a lot of weight and I was sure it would be good !

Great!
Only thing is I wish you could turn off the state capitals part.

Great puzzle for my 2-year-old daughter
The media could not be loaded. Thanks to this puzzle, my 2-year-old daughter learned all the 50 states and many of their capitals. Initially I glued some pieces on the board so that they are less slippery and it's less challenging for her, but once she got used to it, I gradually removed them one by one. Now she can put all the pieces in the right places without help and she seems to feel great satisfaction when she completes it. She wants to play over and over. Her twin brother doesn't show nearly as much interest in it, although he also plays with it occasionally. So I think it depends on the kids, but you never know what your kids are good at unless you let them try a lot of different things. My only complaint about this puzzle is that it doesn't have an on/off button, and the sensors are rather over-sensitive, so even when no one is around the puzzle, just by walking by or closing a door, the voice can be easily triggered. At first it was a little spooky to hear "Arkansas, capital Little Rock" in the middle of the night. I got used to it, though.

Might be better without the sound
My four year old loves puzzles. This one is no exception. I thought the idea of a sound puzzle which named the states and capitals as he completed it would make is educational as well as fun. The problem is that the sensors which set off the sound are extremely sensitive. Today just the shadow of my face as I sat next to him while he worked the puzzle set off a sensor. It got to the point that he would patiently wait while the puzzle listed off two or three other states before he'd finally put the piece in and have the board say the correct name for the piece he placed. So he isn't always hearing the correct name for the state he's putting in. Also some of the tinier states are on the same piece, so the puzzle says the two or three states and capitals for the one piece, which is fine for an older child, but tends to confuse him. The puzzle overall is well made and a nice wooden product. I just wish the sensors were set off by weight instead of light or something.
