Not for my black coated puppy (initially)
The only reason I give this one star is because I am unable to use it. It may work great for all I know. HOWEVER, I purchased this product before I got my first puppy. I wanted to be totally prepared. The first time I examined my puppy's paw, I noticed how black her nails were and how impossible it would be for me to clip her nails without causing harm. This review is to warn all that if you have a black puppy or know you will adopt a black puppy or dog, pet nail clippers will be a challenge, use a handheld dremel. Update: A year later, I had to update this post because what I discovered was that I was so inexperienced and fearful of hurting my puppy that I was quick to advise those with black puppies to be cautious. We did use a Dremel successfully, and it was more for training us, new puppy owners, on how to trim our puppy's nails. However, when you do this often, you become more confident in caring for your pet and more familiar with a dog's physiology, that these nail clippers are our go-to tool. Our dog was never hurt nor is she afraid when we cut her nails.

Alright for the price
I am a dog bather, by profession, I got these nail trimmers because they were a few dollars cheaper than the ones I initially wanted. They are pretty nice, work well, but feel slightly less than new, is the only way I can put it. The steel doesn't seem as shiny or smooth as a brand-new pair, so they are either old or it's from all the styrafoam peanuts that slipped into the packaging from the shipping box. The lock on this pair can be a tad annoying, but nothing horrible. They were fine for the price, and clip my dogs nails without a problem, but I would probably spring for a few more dollars for a Millers Forge pair next time. I don't actually have a dog but at work we only have two sizes, small and large, and this pair being large works for almost every dog over at least 25, maybe 30 lbs, so they are very versatile and useful if you need to use them on several dogs.

Works OK for a medium dog
Well, Because Amazon mixes all the reviews from the small version and the large version, ( I didnt find that out until after I received the product). I ended up with the small version of these. I would have preferred the medium or larger version to fit my hands better. I have a German Short hair Pointer (75 Pounds), these SMALL clippers worked fine for his nails. The little Metal flap on the clippers worked well for a quick and painless trim. It prevented me from cutting too deep with a squirmy dog. The cut was quick and clean. My dog liked these better than the cheap plastic ones from walmart. The rubber handle has a nice grip, and prevented slipping in my hands during a sometimes difficult task. I have only used these once, but the construction seems strong and will last for the test of time.

Great
I purchased both the small and large back in 2003 and finally replaced because they had started to become dull. The only problem is you can’t get a hold of manufacturer for the lifetime warranty

Good safety feature
The best feature on these clippers is the guide that prevents the dog's nail from going too far through the blades & being cut too close. TIP: The last time that we went to the vet, we watched as the tech gradually clipped little slivers off the nails, rather than removing the nail tips with one cut. Our dog's nails came out great with this method (compared to splitting/bleeding that occurred when groomers clipped by exerting force).

Best so far
I have 2 mini dachshunds who hate getting their nails cut. I am able to cut their nails myself (someone helping me hold the dogs) using these much better than any other clipper or rotor device in the past. The guard (to keep you from cutting too much) works alright, but with small dogs, it's still very easy to cut too much off and expose the quick. Always have quick-stop (or flour) handy.

Does the job.
These are reasonably comfortable for the human to use, and the cat finds it totally non-threatening...so I give it a thumbs up. The "safety guide/shield whatever-thing" I found to be more of a nuisance than a help, I may try to take it off, as it seemed to be in the way. Otherwise, they performed well.

Not sure
I wish there were better directions. These were recommended by several people who made it look easy. When I tried to use them, my puppy yelped and now I am scared to use them. It would be nice if the manufacturer put a video on YouTube or something. It had been a month since I had his nails clipped, so the small amount I cut should not have hurt. There is a drawing on the packaging. I'm sure it will be easy after I get some help.
