Keeps a breathing hole in my water feature in the coldest weather.
Basically plug it in and forget about it. The unit floats on the water when warmer. As the surface freezes this maintains a hole the diameter of itself. We had a -15F day this past winter. The ice in the water feature was 5 inches deep except where this unit was. Replaced an earlier one of the same that was 7 year old. It still heated but the cord was fraying..

MUCH NEEDED
GREAT AS USUAL ! BEEN USING THESE FOR YEARS TO KEEP MY KOI POND from completely freezing the entire top. Also for air flow. Best price.

Stopped working after 60 days
This is the second one that I have had. I liked the way the first one worked so when it quit after 3 years I just bought another one. Unfortunately, this one stopped working after only about 60 days. The "trouble-shooting" directions are not easy to follow when its 10 degrees outside. I have a 300 gallon pond. I will probably buy another one anyway. We'll see how it goes.

Worked great but only lasted two years
Loved it - kept the pond from freezing over entirely. But then after a couple years it started taking on water and started to sink. Not sure why - it wasn’t dropped or struck by anything.

Works Well Until It Doesn't
I've had two. One lasted three years and the other four. Best option I've found.

They do not work for long!
I bought two units 3 years ago. One lasted one year and the second one lasted two years. I had to buy another one and will see how long this one last. When they work they are great, but I shouldn't have to buy them every one or two years. I would have given it a 5 star rating if they would work longer than a year or two. My koi rely on having an opening in the winter.

Worked great for 3 years
Overall I like the Thermopond and I'm going to try another one. It worked great for 3.5 years and has a long power cord. The company does honor their warranty and has fast turn around. The current temp is +5F so I need to do something fast. The modes of failure described elsewhere do seem to be common - I've experienced both myself. From just failing to turn on to taking on water and sinking. When it it works - it works great. I purchased my first one back in 2005 and it worked fine the first year, but the next year it didn't even turn on. The company quickly and without hassle sent me a replacement. The second unit had been working like a charm since 2006... It started working fine this season and then around Christmas 2009 the GFCI popped. I went out and noticed that the thermopond was listing to one side and semi-submerged. It was full of water and the plastic on the underside was deformed and puffed out. I live in northern Vermont. Thermopond has kept a hole all winter no matter what the temp is (-10F a few years ago). The ice depth was ~10 inches last year and I could see down through the thermopond to the bottom of the pond. I pull it up to check on the fish and they swim over to see me through the hole. I also have a small winter pump (650gph) running as a homemade bubbler. The pump keeps a hole in the ice down to +15F (lower when there's a lot of snow holding the ground temp in). The two manage to keep a very large (25%) opening when the temps are in the upper 20's and mid-30's. My pond is about 2000 gals (3100gph summer pump). I also put out a whip a few years ago to hold the cord up out of the water and keep the thermopond from drifting around in the wind. Thermopond works, just be prepared to buy a new one every 3 or 4 years ($14 per year). Weigh that with a lower electric bill and this does seem to be a good deal. I'm hoping they've improved the design since I last bought it.

Performs well when working
I purchased January 2019 and used the de-icer until March when weather warmed up. It was placed into pond again in Nov 2019 and quit working in Dec. after a week or so of unseasonably cold weather. I contacted Amazon.ca then K& H Mfg. as it was still under the 1 year warranty. Kudos to K&H Manufacturing for excellent customer service. They instructed me to cut the electrical cord and email them a photo of the unitu with cut cord which I did. A replacement unit was shipped promptly to me at no charge.

Literal fish life saver
This simple floating heater saved our backyard pond fish from running of oxygen during long and cold and snowy Ottawa winter. 6-8 cm of ice covered with almost a meter of snow were no problem for this de-icer, it was always able to keep the breathable opening in the ice, and I did not even had to remove the snow!

Heats well/still evaluating
*Update* April 2020: (bought in November/5 mo ago; SW Ontario) *Unit has seemingly failed. We never touched it. Just let it do it’s work/heat. Seems that it was still heating but it has water it and has upended/not sitting Or floating properly. We will call manufacturer. Or maybe just return it. Original post: It is now Feb 2020. This is the first winter we are using it. So far, so good. It has continued to work, having been on 24/7. It keeps a good size area open for the fish. I am hoping it lasts all winter and hope we can get more than one season out of it. So far, it seems to work well and does the job. We have not had sustained long term ice and snow this year so I am curious if it will still do the job but I think it will. Over a few days of bad winter weather, it did not fail us. Based on this: I’d recommend this product. Seems legit/good.

Seams Allow Water In
I had first tried these many years ago from the originator, for my small pond and they worked well. When the original one gave out, I bought one through Amazon and the seams are not good. They allow water in which eventually sinks the "floating" pond heater. unfortunately, because the cord was frozen in, it was too late to return it. I gave it a 2-star instead of a 1-start because it did heat up the water enough that it kept it from freezing, but that was when I created it a cradle of wood that prevented it from sinking.

Dead fish frozen over
Put in pond in November.. kept a hole in pond till January, now the whole thing is frozen in pond and the hole is frozen over with 4” of ice. Some fish are dead already.. (they were frozen in the ice I chopped out of the middle of the heater ring.. probably the rest will be dead too since I’m bitter sure how many days there was no opening in the ice for gas exchange. Don’t buy if you’re in southern Ontario
