Not all Shop Fox Sanders are created equal.
Packaging was "loose". This is my second W1850. If I could grade this one to the first (purchased 5 years ago), this one is a 4 while the older unit is an 8. Casting on the new one has many visual and machining defects. Had to shim the belt and disc tables. Smaller holes to attach the shields are not tapped. In my opinion, the later version is a factory reject sold in today's market (at a $60 premium).

Well built.
Changing belt needs to be faster, easier!

Multiple hardware issues
It is disappointing to wait for a product only to get partway through assembly and have a missing unique screw. The set screw for the disc sander wheel was missing. After a trip to the hardware for an M5 set screw, I still could not finish. The screws for the plastic belt guard were too short and would not reach the threads. Back to the hardware another 15-mile round trip for longer screws for the guard. This time I checked everything. Finally, it was assembled. Unfortunately, the plastic guard rubs the disc wheel and will not adjust properly to clear. I am going to try to fit some washers under the mounting tabs and see if I can get the rubbing to stop. I can't move the disk wheel out or it hits the work table. I can't move it back because it hits the cast iron frame. It is the small things like this, things easily fixed before the sale, that ruin a product!

Operates very well. A bit of a challenge to assemble.
Operates as advertised. Good strong motor. Sanding belt didn't need any adjustment at all. works great. Assembly was a challenge because one of the bolts that hold the motor in place is in an area hard to access. Requires metric tools. Getting the correct distance between the sanding disk and the tee square surface while keeping the motor belt tight enough took two tries before I got it right. Once set up though, it does the job very well.

Awesome Sander
This product is heavy. Don’t have your wife bring it in for you... The box it was shipped in was in very good condition for the weight. No damage. Assembly was very easy. Everything aligned up and was square with minor adjustments. The sander operated like it was suppose to. Very happy with purchase.

Absolute POC
The reviews are all over the place and I have owned several larger Shop Fox machines and loved them. I bought this for my dad 6 months ago and he liked it, so I ordered one for myself. What a total piece of garbage. NOTHING fit right, the table rubs on the disc, the guards are such a pain to put on. The screw that holds the table at 90° was painted over, so you couldn't run the bolt all the way... THEN, after almost an hour of assembly, the motor was seized up... just hummed. Packed it back up and returned it. Shop Fox... if you can ONLY put your efforts in larger machines, then stop trying to complete with the <$300 junk.

Poor manufacturing quality control
Poor manufacturing quality control. The length of the handle shaft to tighten the belt table is at least an inch too short so you can't even tignten it because the handle starts rubbing up against the table. The disc sander table is cast iron forged but is not straight to where when you secure it to the main chassis it digs into the disc and prevents it from turning. No amount of adjustment to the motor or anything house will fix it. Its an engineering nightmare and I bet since this is a new product no one bothered putting one together to try it. Or I received a lemon??? Doubt it but its manufactured from you know where and in my view no better than Harbor Freight. Good Luck.
