Built like a tank - and squirrels will hate it!

I was given one as a gift about a decade ago. It's my favorite feeder since we have a large gray squirrel population who love the black oil sunflower seeds. Squirrels quickly learn to avoid it but they are persistent and some eventually learn a technique where slide down the tube, and somehow support their weight by placing a foot or paw into the feeding holes and not putting enough weight on the bar to activate it. Clever. And then they proceed to shovel out lots of seeds to their colleagues on the ground below. But it's still the best feeder I've had. After 5 years or so, the rechargeable battery dies and no longer holds a charge but you can get a replacement from Droll Yankee. But we had a windstorm that blew this down on the ground and it finally broke a critical piece that held the bottom to the tube. I could have ordered a replacement part (I still might) but I like the unit so much that I decided to order a new one. Works great and you won't be disappointed! But you local squirrels might just hate you!

Perfect feeder

One trip around and the ???? don’t try it again! The squirrels ???? eat off the ground which is fine. We have seen them sit on the top of the feeder but they can’t gain access to the seeds. I do bring this feeder in every night because I don’t want a bear to destroy it. Awesome feeder! Worth the price in our book!

They just look at it and run away — Waiting I Am

Droll Yankees makes the best bird feeders and they last for decades. One gets what one pays for. Easy to clean and sturdy. I just hung it yesterday, no birds yet and the squirrels just look at and run away. I wonder if the little gluttons gather together and discuss feeding possibilities. Do they know? A very nice addition to my two other decades old Droll Yankees feeders. Thank You!

Only gave 4 stars because of price. Kind of high price. Have had up for awhile, haven't seen any squirrels try to get on it yet.

Well this did the trick ! Had these pesky critters taking all the bird seed until I installed this product ...What entertainment !

It works, but expensive

Although the squirrels don't spin off the feeder like the video shows, so far at they can't figure out how to get the seed out without slipping off.

Yankee Flipper successful

The squirrels that visit our garden are incredible clever and can accomplish the most astonishing athletic feats. When I first had the Flipper I had it hanging too close to an upright pole. The squirrels ascended the pole, held on to it tightly with their hind legs, then reached across to the ring at the base of the Flipper and held it in their fore paws to stop it from turning and helped themselves to some nuts. However, when I moved the Flipper further away from the upright pole the squirrels were defeated by the Yankee flipper. The squirrels can get on top of it, but they cannot safely descend to the bottom to get at the nuts inside. From tooth marks on the lid of the Flipper I guess that In frustration they have attempted to gnaw through the top. Now the squirrels, clever as they are, seem to have decided they won't be successful in trying to get at the nuts in the Flipper and they seem to have given up trying. They now forage on the ground beneath the Flipper for any morsels dropped by the birds.

Squirrel proof and Bear resistant. Amazing.

Finally, a real squirrel-proof bird feeder. It's wonderful. HUGE, but wonderful. I fill it about once a week for our squadron of chickadees, goldfinches, wrens, grosbeaks, cardinals, etc. Our squirrels have learned that they can't get in and pretty much leave it alone (except for the occasional one who tries to gnaw through the lid - which isn't happening either). This is a very well designed, very well built bird feeder. Even when the bear comes to visit (which has happened several times) he has bent the hanging post, stolen the feeder, squashed it by brute force to open it; but we just go retrieve it from the woods, put it back together and IT STILL WORKS!!! I'm impressed.

Expensive Failure

A fun toy if you have no other feeders arround to attract some types of birds. Black birds are smart scavengers and find ways to displace their weight to not trigger the spimner. They then throw seed to the ground for all wildlife to enjoy including the SQUIRRELS. The blackbirds basically hop on it until it wears the battery charge down..... this is sn expensive toy and a fail for what it was intended for.....

good Q. but smaller birds only. Ni CAD old fashion batteries inside and no charging light " finished charging" indicator LED.

its awkward for mid size birds. Good for smaller ones. Large birds tend to fly on top due to small ring and they peck the upper steel lid. still waiting on the squirrels to get some. NI CAD batteris. Considering price point. COME ON guys. get some lithium ion batteries and a light LED to tell you when its done charging on adapter. Time to modernise this thing. look at a NAPA trouble light"93362-Li". as example. LED indicator and automatic cut off when done charging. lasta way longer than ni cad. Who runs ni cad anymore. Good quality though otherwise. I am scared to open lid because the side plastic is so thin at the drilled holes. I hope it does not crack due to its spring loaded upper stainless strong hanger. i might weld on a second larger ring. If bird is too heavy though the bird would be flung off too i guess. lol,

worth every penny

never thought i would dig into my pockets for the sake of the birds. worth every penny. attracts all nut eating birds . ...the poor squirrels are so frustrated in not being able to access the peanuts. ( i am an animal lover...so at minus 25 degrees in winter...i do have some pity for those little furry creatures)
