Need to use their App to setup for HomeKit

I put this under my home office desk to get some nice effect. The LED strips are good quality. I use my own clips to attach them to the underside of my desk. I am using HomeKit to control these lights. After some trial and error, I realized i need to use their app to start the setup. It was harder than it should be. Once setup it works but the respond time is ok. The lighting effect is good.

Not HomeKIT compatible!

As much as I would like to give a glowing review for this product, I cannot. The Sylvania Smart Light Strip claims HomeKit compatibility, using bluetooth rather than WiFi functionality - but it does not actually have the capacity to be connected. The instructions claim that in order to use it with HomeKit you must first download the Sylvania app. After doing so and pairing the device in the app, updating the firmware to current, and gaining control there - there is no pathway to integrate the device with HomeKit. Following the 'reset instructions' to get the device ready for pairing again, I unplugged and re-plugged the light strip 5 times and received the light changing notification that indicates it is ready for pairing. Once in this mode, I attempted to pair with my Home by scanning the barcode on the light strip. No result. I then re-joined it with the Sylvania app and tried again - same, no results for HomeKit, but works fine in Sylvania app. I attempted many things: 1) Trying to contact Sylvania (cannot find help or even the product on their website) 2) Resetting my phone 3) Disable re-enable bluetooth 4) Factory reset the device 5) Add before/after integration with Sylvania app. No matter what, it would not add to my Home.

A hassle to set up in HomeKit, but works well

This was kind of a hassle to set up, at least for me. I use this with HomeKit, so I can’t speak for Alexa or Google Home. 3 strips of LED lights, coiled in the package. It almost looks like it is only one, but the strips are already connected to each other. Also included are the Bluetooth controller unit, which is female and has 3M pads on it, and the large power adapter. I plugged everything in, and looked at the documentation for setting it up. It had the HomeKit QR code, so out of habit, I just scanned it. Waiting, waiting, and nothing. So I install the app and then I go from there. You have to click on smart speaker in the app to “enable” the device. It also does any required firmware updates. It took about 3 minutes until it told me it was complete, but the lights were not on. From there you can click from within the app to switch over to your Home app to set up the lights in HomeKit. I ended up having to unplug and reconnect the various sockets going from the light strip to the Bluetooth controller a few times before the lights came to life. Response is a little slow, but that is to be expected from Bluetooth. The white color is very bright, but the other colors seem to not be so bright. I placed this behind my wife’s display shelf for her various luxury bags that she works hard to buy (her only, very expensive, vice) and we like to use blue light to accent things, but the blue was very unremarkable. It won’t be too bad when the rest of the room is dark, but with natural or other lighting, it really doesn’t stand out. All in all, not a bad set of lights. No hub required, and doesn’t take a spot on our already clogged WiFi. They are expandable, it seems.

Small but works well and good smart integration

I plan to use this on a project I have in the near future and with testing these out, they looked really nice. I love things that can connect to Alexa as I have a cluttered room and this makes it easy so I don't have to go into the area to turn on the lights. It's a bit small, so I might decide to get more or use them or a different area, but they work really well and I love that I can change the colors to anything I want. It has a separate app that needs downloading so it can connect which I don't like, but I've had to do this before with other smart objects so it's nothing new. In the end, I do enjoy these lights and like that it works well with alexa.

It's Ok

I don't hate the Sylvania Led Light Strip, but I don't love it. The colors are pretty bright, but it's slow to respond and took a while to get set up. Now one of the strips doesn't respond at all sometimes or the color is off.

Make sure you know which version you want...both work well.

So I got the Bluetooth one to try that out. I have about 8 of the zigbee ones. They work pretty good, once in a while change colors on me without any trigger, but not terribly often. Have those set up as under cabinet lighting, with a motion sensor through smartthings. The BT ones will use different app from sylvania for setup. The app for BT is pretty simple, use it to update and pair, select your home system. I also have alexa, so set the BT up through that. It was pretty easy to connect, had to unplug and plug back in to connect to alexa. Otherwise it showed up as expected. Colors look good, no issues with alexa controlling so far. Do not think their BT ones will work with smarthings though, so need to keep that in mind, unfortunately. There's so many variations between older zigbee, wifi, and BT...finding the best working and keeping them straight is proving challenging as you want to expand. If your trying to do light strips on a cheaper budget, Sylvania is worth looking into in my opinion, but I feel like you get what you pay for if your willing to spend more (Hue).
