Much easier than building a niche from scratch!

Niche is one piece which makes it leakproof. All sides slope slightly which allow water to flow out of niche when installed horizontally or vertically. It installs prior to your wall material; drywall or cement board. Tiles very easy over surface. So much nicer and quicker than building a niche from scratch or other flanged units in which you install over your wall surface material which then needs perimeter edge feather patching after installation. Only issue we found is the nailing flange measures appropriately 5/8” thick which makes it stick out 1/8” from the wall surface when using standard thickness wall materials. We found that you may need to address this by using recessed nailers or chiseling 1/8” along wood framing around flange area so it will be flush with wall; which is a lot of extra work. If you know ahead of time it’s thicker than your wall material than it is simple to frame to allow for it. Though if the manufacturer would redesign with only a 7/16” or 1/2” thick flange it would be a much better product worthy of 5 stars.

Very sturdy niche, but be aware the flange is thicker than the cement board

I got this as it was cheaper than buying in store something similar but this niche is screwed onto studs then the cement board is installed around it. Others I have use have the flange go over the cement board, Not a bid difference except the flange is 5/8" thick and the cement board is 1/2" thick. When installing larger tile with a larger trowel this isnt an issue. But when installing subway tile with a v notch trowel the tile sits onto the flange and raises the tile slightly above other tiles around it. This makes for a harder time to install. This could easily be avoidable with a flange that is also 1/2" thick to match the cement board thickness.
