Seems effective, a bit big and a bit loud
We bought this based on The Wirecutter review. It is a little taller than I wish, and louder. I haven't had a chance to make thick soups or smoothies, but the one smoothie I have made turned out well. It comes with a very useful plunger to break up clogs — much better than the wooden spoon I used with my old blender.

Unbeatable value for money: blends like the pros, without the sting
The time had come to replace my trusted Omniblend V (still working, but I relocated to a different country and couldn't ship everything). Choosing a new blender wasn't an easy task and I went through a lot of reviews, here and elsewhere. Ultimately, the Oster Versa 1400 sounded like the best option. It is said to be as efficient as its Vitamix competitor that is twice the price, and if the BlendTec seemed to mix slightly smoother smoothies, the difference wouldn't be obvious to all but the most hardcore users, and it costs way more. So I took the plunge. I have to say the first thing I noticed is how good and flattering the Versa 1400 looks, and its commands are simple and convenient. It doesn't offer a timer but there are three pre-programmed cycles for smoothies, soups and dips/spreads, which will stop when complete. The build feels solid and well finished, in particular the jug and its lid: the plastic is thick and pleasant to the touch, and great attention has been paid to details, like the steam vents in the lid (no more holding it into place when blending warm dishwashing water to clean it after use), the neat Versa detailing, the shiny dial or the discreet button lighting. I've been using my Versa for a couple of weeks now, and I have to say it is making the best, creamiest smoothies I could expect. I've tried blending usually hard-to-blend seeds (flax, chia) and seedy fruits (raspberries, mixed berries) as well as fibrous vegs and frozen ingredients, and I'm happy to report that the Versa 1400 blends them all into oblivion. I've occasionally found a small remnant of formerly frozen fruit (mangos, peaches), but to be honest this happens even with professional blenders, even in shop-bought smoothies (ever got one stuck inside your straw?). So top marks there nonetheless. It's also a lot faster, taking about half the time I used to need with my Omniblend V. The only point where I would have given the latter the advantage is regarding the noise, which seems to be substantially louder. But since you require much less time, I suppose it is an acceptable trade-off. What's more, it is the first blender I own that pulls off nut butters flawlessly (almonds so far). It will also produce a smooth hummus (and certainly most dips), which my Omniblend V was terrible at (to the point I had purchased a separate smaller Cuisinart chopper/blender for that sole purpose). My only gripe with both nut butters and dips is that it's not too easy to get them out of the jar. For the practical side, I love the stubby jar that can live on the base unit even on my counter top, still fitting below the upper cupboards. The jar is a breeze to clean -- as with most blenders, throw in warm water with a drop of dishwasher liquid, blend and rinse. I find it takes me a few seconds to fit the jug properly into the base unit's safety mechanism, but I suppose it's a feature worth having. As many others have reported, there is one detail that surprisingly misses the spot, and that's the 3-sided tamper. Given how well thought-out the rest seems to be, it makes this choice even more surprising as it is not as convenient as a cylindrical one. One final consideration, which for me makes the Versa 1400 a no-brainer: its price. Shipping for about as much as the Omniblend and for much less than a Vitamix or a Blendtec, it still manages to deliver the same level of service as the latter two. Sure, the Ninjas and the NutriBullets start from much cheaper, but they're really in a different category. So if you want to play with the big boys, but can't afford the high price they command or like me you like getting the best value for your money (unless you really, really want a big brand for show, why pay more, seriously?), then the Versa 1400 is just what you need.

Was Outstanding (then ...) -- From 5 Stars to 1.
DO NOT BUY (see the Updates at the end). The motor is great, but the jar will fail. When it does, there is NO warranty support for the jar. You can buy a new one, which seems to never in be in stock (see Oster website for customer reviews). Save your money, and buy a Vita Mix instead. I'm downgrading to 1 star after 2nd jar failure in 4 years. Junk jar design, and no support for a clearly flawed product (see other reviews, and Oster website customer reviews). Original Review: We've been using this blender for about a month, and said simply it is outstanding. Average use is at least once per day, and often more. We use it for yogurt-fruit smoothies, a variety of salsas, blended soups, and very thick adobo sauces. It has performed flawlessly in every application, and cleanup is a breeze (simply follow the blender jar cleaning instructions in the manual and it cleans up very easily). Oster has done a great job in design and engineering, and presented a great value for the home kitchen. I've used a number of Vitamix professional-grade blenders many times in professional/commercial kitchens. While I always wanted one for home the $500-$600 price tag kept me away. I finally broke down and was ready to buy one, but then in the course of searching Amazon found this. Given that it sells here for less than half the price of the Vitamix, we took the gamble that the reviews here were sound an bought the Oster. In my hands, after a few weeks, I find the Oster VERSA 1400-watt blender every bit as good for the home as the professional-grade Vitamix blenders. The noise level is about the same as the Vitamix, the blending efficiency is every bit as good, and the size is about identical for the newer models designed to fit on home counters with cabinets above (shorter-wider jar). The program smoothie function is a real plus - works beautifully on yogurt-fruit smoothies, even with frozen fruits. The blended products pour easily from the jar - no mess. The Oster has the same warranty period as the Vitamix (7 years), performs just as well in blending yogurt smoothies, salsas, soups and adobos, and appears to be every bit as durable. We are extremely pleased with the blender, and even if it doesn't hold up as well over the longer term, we can buy two of these for less than the price of one Vitamix blender (but with a 7-year warranty I doubt that will be an issue). I don't know if it would hold up as well in the abusive environment of professional kitchens, but for the home I see absolutely no advantage for the Vitamix. The only cons I have are: (1.) with the jar on the base it misses fitting on our counter with cabinets above by about 1/2", and (2.) the minimum volume for this type of blender to be effective is ~ 2 cups. Storage is not really a problem - we store the jar on the countertop right next to the base, pushed back against the wall. Everything is out of the way, and ready for immediate use. The comparable Vitamix would have the same issue. Minimum volume is the same for the same size and style blender jar on the Vitamix. These are not designed for small volumes. I highly recommend this blender to anyone who wants a real food blender (as opposed to a bar blender), is thinking about a Vitamix, and wants one at less than half the price for the equivalent blender. You won't be disappointed. UPDATE 6/15/2016: After 2 years of average daily use as described in the original review I noticed some black greasy-looking sludge building up under the the blender jar drive base, along with regular moisture accumulation up inside the stainless steel body of the jar base. On close inspection, viewing from the top of the jar to the base some liquid was clearly trapped beneath the jar body and the top of the metal drive base. Spinning the gear on the bottom of the jar by hand made it clear that there was rough metal-on-metal grinding, suggesting a bearing or something similar inside the jar's base was shot. I removed the blade via the bolt inside the jar, and found a lot black ground metal sludge under the blade and washer. Removing the drive shaft and splined gear exposed the bearing race, which was clearly shot and grinding itself to destruction. From this experience, and other reviews posted more recently, it is clear that the drive system integrated into the permanently attached jar base is a significant weakness in Oster's design. There have been multiple failures reported. The ugly side is as the bearing & shaft system wear, some of the finely ground metal will end up being blended into the contents of the jar. Clearly, this is an undesirable a design flaw. For that reason, and the fact the same kind of failure has been recounted by several others in these reviews, I have altered my original 5-star rating to 2 stars. No I won't be recommending this blender to anyone nor would I buy it again, unless Oster comes out with a new jar base drive design that precludes these problems. It was great while it lasted, but it didn't last (2 years), and the contamination issue is real and significant. Update No. 2: 4/18/18 -- the second blender jar died this morning, repeating the same bearing failure as the first blender jar. Based on ~ 4 years of approximately daily use, a blender jar will last about 2 years. Replacement jar from Oster is $39.00, but at the time I write this, they are out of stock. Sucks. Looking at the Oster website, this failure is a frequent problem. Talking with Oster's customer service folks, there is NO warranty support for the blender jars, which they have NOT had for at least 3 months. If you want a blender that will be useable and serviceable for more than two years, look elsewhere.

Doesn't last...
Good blender for the time it worked. Purchased in early 2020, used about once a week for smoothies, and it has now died. A rough calculation: we were able to make about 116 smoothies with it. Not great. The blender can still work but one critical piece is broken: the "drive stud" that connects the engine to the blade to rotate it. It looks like it's worn off. No worries, I thought, I'll buy a replacement part! Nope, they are nowhere to be found. You will find many drive studs for other Oster models, but specifically not for the Versa model. What a bummer.

good blender
I had this blender for one for 2,5 years and used it at least once a day for everything (smoothie, curcuma juice, yogourts, nuts butter...) sometimes it gets hot a bit and smell burnt but was working very well. I bought the second right after the first broke but the quality was not the same, the motor was weaker making high pitch noises, smells burning and the buttons were loose and it broke the first week. I sent it back and had a replacement with the exact same. That third one (the motor and button) sounds as strong as the first and so far (3 weeks) everything is good. Hopefully, it will stand years
