If the pack fits and your budget allows...

This is a small, very expensive, oddly designed backpack. But - for certain situations - it is great. Before you lay down your hard-earned cash, take a moment and read on... First, understand that you're paying for bomb-proof construction and top-quality materials. If you work outdoors (ranger,wildland firefighter,military operative) this pack is designed for the abuse you'll surely give it. For the rest of us (me included) it is overbuilt. Don't get me wrong; I love the heavy YKK zippers and 1000D nylon fabric, but they are more than I honestly need in my suburban existence. You, the buyer, will need to decide if this robustness is worth the price. Second, you should understand this particular bag's DNA... It started life as a sling-pack several years ago before being redesigned into a conventional backpack. The addition of that second strap indicates the fatal flaw inherent in most slings: They are easy to fill to the point of discomfort Thus the Typhoon went from being an uncomfortable sling pack to a light-feeling backpack. Redistributing the weight of 10-12 lbs hung from a single shoulder to being evenly carried across two can feel like magic. Ask me how I know. Third, this is an old design. The exterior pockets are not appropriately sized for smartphones or large tablets. Furthermore, the interior doesn't have any elastic dividers or pen slots, and there is no dedicated sleeve for a laptop. There are, however, rows of molle webbing all over the pack... I attached a padded smartphone pouch to the left side, and my Galaxy Tab S 10.5 rides in a neoprene sleeve that I slipped into main compartment. I've also dropped in a couple of pocket edc organizers to address that additional shortcoming. I already had all those accessories, but you might (rightly) balk at buying any of them for an already-expensive bag. Fourth, although the pack is small, in my opinion it doesn't look weird on an average sized man. If you've been carrying a similar-sized sling, the Typhoon probably won't appear a whole lot different... I consulted with an expert on this issue (my wife) and she stated that I don't look any stranger than usual. :) I purchased the Typhoon because I'd become disenchanted with my various sling packs as far as comfort is concerned. I own (or have owned) Maxpedition's Noatak, Sitka and Malaga. I also have a Vanquest V-Slinger 2.0 (and yes, I'm getting help for my addiction). The Typhoon has been a major improvement in carrying comfort. For reference, I'm 6' 1" and 195 pounds with fairly broad shoulders. The pack sits and carries comfortably if I don't cinch the straps super-tight. I'm leaner than a lot of guys, and if I had considerable girth I'd probably forgo this pack. It is narrow enough where the straps connect at the bottom (about 11" wide) to possibly create chafing issues for wide-bodied folks. Finally, the Typhoon will not be as convenient as a typical sling-pack if very quick access to your stuff is important. Nor is it not a good option for CCW. However, if you simply want to carry your tablet, phone, jacket, sunglasses and EDC stuff in relatively weightless comfort, it MIGHT be an expensive option worth considering. In any case, it will certainly last long enough to be handed down to your grandchildren.

Over all a good bag

I like this bag. It’s perfect size to carry your essentials. The only thing is the zippers don’t operate smoothly and you got to yank on them especially the bigger front pocket. To open or close the front pocket zipper, you MUST use both hands. It looks like there is not enough space between front top and bottom pockets for the zipper to operate freely. I hope they redesign it because it’s a good bag.

Overall Excellent Small Pack

Maxpedition makes quality and durable gear for whatever your project or mission is. Can't really complain a ton about this pack. It's small, somewhat modular, and works for my needs very well. I take away 1 star due to two reasons: there is no pocket or area to store a water bladder; you have to keep it in the main compartment with whatever else is there. And the hose needs to come out through the zipper; there is no pass-through like in most modern packs. Overall, it's a great smaller but older pack.

Perfect Compliment....

If you are looking for a pack to run and compliment a Recon Harness system type of loadout, then this is the pack. It allows for max agility with ample room for storage. I theorized that this system would work with the idea I wanted, and it blew my expectations out of the water. Hope this helps for those of you on the fence or researching.

Small, and Worth It

Yes, this is a small bag---that's the point! I use this as my school bag, and it keeps things neat. The upper-outer pocket I use for my TI-83 Calculator and iClicker, and the lower-outer pocket for pens, pencils, sharpies, highlighters, my agenda and flashlight (with room to spare). Along the right side (as you can see in the picture) I use the upper pocket for my SOG multitool, and the lower for gum and ear-buds---and the left tac-tied with a Maxpedition Gear 1-QT Canteen Pouch with canteen. Otherwise the main compartment is big enough for three one-inch binders for classes. Overall, this is a fantastic bag for me. The bag is shorter and thinner than a stereotypical school bag (binders still fit), with the outer v-strap and bottom straps keeping the weight secured and close to your body for easy running without everything jumping up and down inside (arm straps and back are comfortable too). Plus the 4 outer pockets are a real benefit for organization, as they are basically permanently mounted versions of Maxpedition pouches that you can buy separately. Not to mention the build quality is the best I have seen from any brand (you must've realized this by now if you've read a number of Maxpediton reviews)---stitching, materials, waterproofing (yes it is ~99% waterproof in a hurricane, I've tested), etc. Lastly, if you're worried people are going to point and laugh because the bag is smaller than normal, don't sweat it. Honestly, I've been given complements for this bag, with people asking where I got it, and I've never been told it looks like its for a kindergartner. So buy the bag if you're interested, and if it isn't for you just send it back---but I don't think you'll send it back if you're looking for the same bag I was.

Well made and sized right.

The Typhoon backpack is a excellent pack for daily use. I wanted something which was not too bulky but had room for the things I want with me when I cycle to work. It fit that purpose very well. Also I needed to attach another Maxpedition everyday carry pouch to the side and the straps on the Typhoon easily accommodated that securely. Maxpedition stuff is well made with sturdy material. I’m quite pleased with it and am always astonished when I empty it and realize how much stuff it will carry.
