Exact replacement for a broken dual 3-way switch.

I had to replace a broken dual 3-way switch that would not stay turned off. Something inside must have physically broken because it would mechanically just spring back to one position. It just happened to be in the on position. (Of course, I could have just gone to the remote location to turn it off. That would have defeated the whole purpose of having a 3-way switch.) This switch was an exact replacement. It actually fit back into the same wall box. The box was the smaller metal kind that they used to use back in the 60's. It is a good thing that I know what I am doing when it comes to electrical work. It was sold as a multi-line dual 3-way switch, (which is what I needed), but it comes with a jumper tab that connects the two lines together to make it a single line dual 3-way switch. Make sure you remove that tab if you are using multiple lines. Devices on more than one circuit breaker that are controlled by this switch, (like a front porch and interior garage light), must be using multiple lines. If you use this switch on multiple lines with the jumper installed, you could cause a direct short of your 240 AC voltage when you turn your circuit breakers back on. Make sure that you turn the power off for both lines before you start your installation. I always use an AC voltmeter to measure all of the wires to safety ground to ensure that the power has been removed and no ground faults exist. (If there is another switch in the same box you should identify and turn that breaker off as well.) Installation is as easy as you make it. I like to replace no more than two wires at a time. You have to keep track of which wire goes where if you are doing a replacement. Make sure that you keep the wires that were on the upper half of the old switch moved to the upper half of the new switch, so you do not short circuit the wiring. I had the same problem that I always have. The wires are just barely long enough to fit on the switch terminals and then the wires are too long to all fit back into the electrical box. I always manage to get them connected and squeezed back where they belong, but it takes a little effort and patience. Now the new switch works great. The garage lights stay off when I turn them off again.

Leviton 5243 15 Amp, 120/277 Volt, Duplex Style...

Wanted to add a three way switch circuit to a room that already had a three way switch circuit, using the existing 2X4 box. Could not find a double three way switch locally. This Leviton 5243 Duplex style works in a single standard box with a duplex outlet face plate (purchased locally). Needed this to add a three way switch circuit to a room for a ceiling light being added to the room that already had a three way switch circuit for spotlights focused on the fireplace . This switch is solidly built and can be used for either the hot feed or the switched leg end of the circuit. A removable tab allows you to feed both circuits from one hot wire at one switch by leaving the tab on, then remove the tab at the other end switch to feed the two separate switched legs. In new construction, I would probably put in a 4X4 box with two separate three way switches side by side. This double switch is easy to use when remodeling/changing an existing room, or if there is not have room for a 4X4 box.

Works as expected. Saved me from messing with installing a larger box in a wall covered in ceramic tile. They're not cheap, but can save on a big time consuming headache.
