Not perfect, but works great with Ring alarm system
I just installed this lock today, but as I'm already an owner of the Kwikset 913 (I replaced it but will reuse on another door), I'm pretty familiar with their products. The good/great: - I was relieved to discover that this lock works GREAT if you already have a Ring alarm system. The app can automatically add your existing access codes when doing the setup. You can add and remove codes through the Ring App, as well as lock and unlock the door. The inability to add and remove codes without removing the lock cover was my biggest complaint on the old 913 model (which is not smart, but does have a keypad). I wasn't able to tell any specifics about this feature from reviews or the product description and took a chance when I ordered. I'm very pleased. - Ability to re-key using the Kwikset SmartKey feature. (This is not "Smart" in the modern sense; it's purely mechanical, but allows you to rekey any SmartKey lock quickly and easily) - Like the model 913, I can set a switch to automatically lock the door 30 seconds after it's been unlocked. I'm one of those people who sometimes forgets, and I'd rather be safe than sorry. Update: you can recreate this behavior with an Alexa routine, and set it for any time delay you'd like. (when is unlocked, alexa will wait xx minutes lock) - The lock works with Alexa - You can tell Alexa to lock the door - You can tell Alexa to unlock the door (this feature is disabled unless you override it, for security reasons) - You can set routines to automatically lock or unlock based on certain circumstances - I'm OK with the random number feature that prevents a fingerprint pattern from being discerned. You can turn it off. I think it may be a little confusing for guest use, but is pretty easily explained. - I like look of the display - Includes 2 3-inch screws for the strike plate. I needed to buy longer drill bits for pilot holes, but I like the added security of the longer screws. The not so great - When using with a Ring alarm, access codes can only be 4 digits, though if you manually enter them, they can be up to 8. I'd rather have a longer code for accessing my house. - The screws on the housing are tiny and awkward to work with, though they do now have a Philips head rather than requiring a teeny tiny Allen wrench of the 913. The bottom screw is the worst, because my door handle is in the way and the screwdriver has to be held at a slight angle. - Some reviews complain about the need to remove the housing in order to change batteries. The screw to the battery cover can be removed, but this leaves the lock more vulnerable to code tampering. (the screw is inside at the top.) I did remove the screw on mine. I figure that someone who knows how to change codes can just as easily remove the entire housing with a screwdriver. Update - 2 months after installation, the keypad is not lighting up. The lock still operates via the app, so I know the batteries aren't completely dead. To be continued . . .

Kwikset's 91X series are easy to install and integrate into a Smart Home
Update after 6 months of use: Battery life is an issue, reduced rating to 4 stars. The batteries in these vary greatly in how long they last. I have two of these on my garage doors, and the rear one will last several months, while the front one (which sees more use) will only last 1-2 months, at most. I have replaced the batteries with rechargeable ones, but it's still rather annoying to change them this often. The other issue that I have with this lock is that you have to remove screws to change the batteries, which makes the lack of battery life just that more annoying. 2nd update: I called Kwikset about the battery issue, and they did some quick troubleshooting. After finding no error codes or issues with the lock, they are sending me a replacement. The battery life was getting worse, lasting 2-3 weeks at most, with almost no use. I will continue to update this review once I receive a replacement. 3rd update: The replacement from Kwikset was much better than the original. The battery lasts 3-4 months or more with occasional use, and I've switched to Eneloop rechargeable batteries for most devices in my home. I think I wouldn't hesitate to purchase one of these again, but would definitely call Kwikset for a replacement if they have a battery consumption issue. Original review: This is the 4th Kwikset deadbolt I've installed in my home, and the 3rd one with Z-Wave technology. I've put these on all the exterior doors of my home, and the installation is fairly easy. The instructions are well written, and if you have basic home-repair tools (screw drivers, maybe a small drill, and maybe a chisel) you'll be able to install these without too much trouble. The only trouble you might run into is if your door doesn't have a standard opening, or more likely, if your latch plate recess isn't the same shape and needs to be enlarged. The deadbolt comes with a much heavier duty latch plate that uses 4 screws - 2 short, 2 long - to secure your door better. The longer screws will go into to wall and make it much harder to kick the door in. However, if you have side-lights, you may have to use the shorter screws. This latch plate is slightly over-sized, so you may need to spend a few minutes carefully enlarging your latch plate recess with a chisel. As far as the Smart-Home integration, my Ring base station paired quickly, and integrated with the Ring controls with absolutely no issues. While this exact model isn't listed as "Works with Ring" certified, it appears that all the 91X series Z Wave locks work with Ring. Kwikset also has a "Smart Key" feature, which allows you to easily set your lock to existing keys. This takes just a few seconds to do, and works with most standard home keys. The fit and finish is excellent, and the "Contemporary" style looks great with a craftsman style door. I paired this with a Kwikset Signature Vedani door handle, which I think compliments the styling quite well. I have read some other reviews that mention battery life can be hit or miss, so I'll keep and eye on the use and level. My lock is close to a Z Wave repeater, and should see limited use, so hopefully I'll get more than a few months out of the batteries.

Working Well
Initially when I installed this product, it would work when it wanted to. I made modifications and tightened screws and haven’t had an issue.

Looks, Feels and operates well
Easy to install and intergrade into my Home Assistant z-wave integration. A little noise during lock/unlock operations. however, not a show stopper.

Works fine…
2nd UPDATE: After three more months, batteries are at 80%. Again, I don’t remotely un/lock more than a few times per week. Still, I’m very pleased with battery life and the lock overall. UPDATE: Battery Life - Despite facing the hot Texas sun, my system still indicates this locks batteries are at 90% after two months. While it is in constant communication with my alarm system, I do not often use the motorized lock. I more often manually lock/unlock from the inside, which clearly conserves a lot of battery. I suspect that if you use the motorized lock on average 5-7 times/week, you’ll likely get 6+ months from a set of batteries. Quality - Some have expressed concerns over plastic parts. However, the lock itself and external housing, along with the locking mechanism (including inside locking handle), are all metal. Only inside components (eg electronic housing) are plastic on this lock. ===== …waiting for the other shoe to drop. Got this deadbolt because Kwikset is compatible with other keyed locks in the house and this unit is compatible with Alarm.com. Concerned about the numerous negative reviews regarding battery life, but after our first week, this lock still reports 100% battery despite being installed on a door that faces the Texas afternoon sun. The lock motor itself is somewhat weak and definitely requires having ZERO friction when locking/unlocking.

Received previously opened, broken unit with missing Z-Wave module!
I received the box that was clearly opened. The stickers on the outside were opened. However, inside it looked like everything is in order - the pouches for all the screws were intact. So I proceeded with the installation. It turns out, that the touch screen connector was missing two pins and the touch screen was dead. I wasn't sure if those missing pins were the cause, so I called Kwikset support. They should not be missing, meaning the connector was broken. While talking to support, they asked me for Z-Wave serial numbers, which is when I discovered there was no Z-Wave module at all! Just a plastic plug. The module was nowhere in the box. I don't mind buying open-box items, but they should be clearly described! Also, someone should inspect returned items before they got sold again! I wasted a couple of hours replacing original lock, installing the new one, reinstalling and rechecking everything when it wasn't working, waiting on the phone for support, and then finally reinstalling the original lock.

Great lock
Works very well with wave 2 hub, love the feature of getting notice as soon as door lock Open and closes. Plus cash open from phone.

Well-engineered and integrates well with multiple smart home systems
I first integrated this with a Universal Devices ISY-994 controller over z-wave and it worked great! I later integrated it with my Ring Alarm and I am even happier because the Ring integration is very clever and intuitive. If there are multiple users setup on the Ring Alarm panel, the same code can be used to unlock/lock the door as well as disarm/arm the alarm. Ring app will tell you who unlocked the door.

Easy to install, easy to pair, works great
Swapped out a 910 which has no keypad just a key lock with zwave - still working just fine for a couple years - this one is now on the back door. Anyway the 916 with touch pad is so much more convenient... also is zwave + and is smaller and quieter! The original shipment came in wrong color, but Amazon quickly sent a replacement... easy to pair to vera plus... easy to program codes... easy to install... and easy to re-key. Works great!
