Great design!
I like to start with the bad and end on a good note so here goes. A lighter, thinner medal material was used to construct this trap. This makes it prone to getting "bent out of shape" very easily. The original Danielson traps use a sturdier material. The other down side to thinner material is it makes the trap lighter. If there is any current in the water where the trap is being used, be careful with buoy size as this could get your trap washed away. Seals and sea lions can break into these traps easier when they attempt to get your bait. On the up side, the gates are wider and there is a top access panel on this design. I have always modified my original Danielson traps and added larger gates for the crabs to get in. This is huge because there are crabs too large to get into the original smaller gates It also makes it easier for all crabs to get into your trap. The access panel on the top means that you don't have to partially take apart your trap to gain access to any crabs caught as well as the bait basket. This will help with making the trap last longer plus much easier to use.

Not the same trap!
Don't order these believing they are the same traps you got a couple years ago. Design has been altered and components cheapened. Definitely don't order for California, as the escape rings are much larger to meet Washington and/or Oregon size limit.

large escape holes
Trap may work for large crabs, Dungeness, but escape holes are big. may work better for straight up and down movement. I set the pot off a drop off and pulled it up against the incoming tide and all the doors opened and evrything inside, bait, 2 crabs, washed out. not sure if this is going to work for me on the East coast.

Good trap, with mods
I have used all types of traps and rings over the years. I have several heavy commercial quality traps as well. You can spend hundreds and not do any better than these Danielson’s fold up traps. Yes, They won’t last a lifetime, but between tides, seals and thieves, I’m happy to get 8-10 years out of them anyway. At a quarter the price of other traps, it works out well. That said, there are some things I do to make them more usable. I zip tie 4-1’ lengths of rebar across the bottom outside so they don’t float away with the tide or current. I like the snap-on harnesses as well. Add a small round float to the top of the harness below the mainline and you will ensure your trap lands upright when dropped in. Always use lead line if crabbing around boats so you don’t risk fouling their props and causing an accident. Always put your name and number on the floats so they can be returned if or when they do float away. Get a mesh bait bag to put your bait in inside the trap - the bait will last far longer. Lastly, wash them down well after use to reduce corrosion. I find that with the easy access top door on these, these traps last longer than the old ones because you aren’t torquing them to open them after every haul which invariably caused them to break. After six or eight years when they do break, take all the attachments off and put them on a new trap. Cheap, simple and easy to store when the season is over. Also, I’m in Oregon and they work great for dungenous. I don’t know about other species.

Engineered by a crab who didn't want to stay caught.
Excellent quality, but totally nonfunctional for normal use with blue crabs. Plenty of doors and holes, but normal size East Coast and Gulf Coast crabs can walk out (carrying a 1 pound fish) all the convenient large holes and doors. Fish is the usual bait and it would take a large fish (2-4 pounds to stay inside the confines of the trap). I put two one-pound fish in which slid through the holes in the bottom.
