Use to make chocolate toffee crunch. Worked well except for Alarm!
As the title says, I have used this in the past to make chocolate toffee crunch. The toffee comes out perfectly. Now, unlike other people who have reviewed here, I have not used another candy thermometer so I have nothing to compare this to. Also, I have only used it for this one recipe, which if you ever tried would agree that it was worth the price of the thermometer! Regarding the thermometer, the clips to keep it attached to my cuisinart 2 qt work fine. The thermometer seems accurate. As they say, the proof is in the pudding so I can't tell if the temperature is accurate, just that when I take the toffee off the burner at the temperature indicated on the thermometer (and in the recipe), it comes out perfectly. One side note though...My advice is to not count on the alarm giving you fair warning that the temperature is approaching. Perhaps I have not been able to figure out how to use the alarm properly, but I set it for 280 degrees F to give me a little warning before it hit 290 degrees and it didn't go off until after it had already reached 290 and I had it off the burner. Luckily I was watching. Therefore, make sure you WATCH the temperature and (another tip) make sure you watch it very closely as it closely approaches the temp that you need as it goes pretty fast then. Hope this helps.

Not for microwaves
Just got it and 2 more for gifts. Tested and it worked great. Simple controls and nice long cable so that you can leave probe in oven and the display out. I can see that the display could be damaged by moisture since it is not sealed at the joints but hey, it was not advertised to be water proof at 3 atmospheres! Make note that I am talking about a conventional oven here, I think I read one of the reviews about using it in a microwave oven because it is stainless and stainless is a non-ferrous metal so it will not arc...bad idea...The cable going through the door will compromise the seal and microwaves just love to get outside the cooking area and then will play havoc with your door/seal and it is just not safe. Wish someone would come up with a thermometer for the microwave. talk about ease of making candy!

Only worked for 40 days.
Purchased this on 6/10/15. Its worked fine until today. Probe malfunction, but now past return date. New probe is $17 and change....New device is $20. I won't be ordering devices from this manufacturer again. Update....I am happy to upgrade the rating to 4 stars.....It would be 5 but there is the issue with the probes. I have, thanks to very good customer service, (Rikki), had two of these units encounter the exact same failure about 40 days into use, it is the probe...not the device. The device is quite good for the money and CS is exemplary I am sticking with it on the DCCT-S. Its alarm setting for over and under temp is good within 2 degrees. Once you know that, its a breeze. I make cheese so to use a simple thermo is more to watch with a lot going on. Bottom line...Great device but get an extra probe so when and if the orig fails you have a backup while you wait for warranty replacement.

Great for Candy
I have found that this is a much better thermometer to be using for candy and such, as digital is so accurate and you cannot read it incorrectly. With a regular bulb type thermometer, one tends to read at an angle, thus getting a false or inaccurate reading. My only problem is that when I am setting the temp, it seems to only go up by odd numbers, ie 237, when I am wanting 236 or 238. I don't know if I have a defective unit or what. Otherwise, the audible signal is awesome. Set a few degrees below what you really want, and then watch. If I set it exactly where I want it, it seems to go higher before I am able to react, thus I exceed the temp I want. I would have given a 5 star, except for what I have stated above, I am unable to do so,.

It's easy to set up and use
It's easy to set up and use, and works well. With meats, it works very well both on the grill and in the oven. My only complaint is that I make lots of Peanut Brittle, and it doesn't respond nearly as quickly as my previous digital candy thermometer. I've made a few batches using both thermometers, and at critical points in the process the new one is consistent, but at some points in the process it's off by as much as 10-20 degrees. Once I've learned that, I can work with it without problems, but had I just started using it by itself when I received it, I would have had to throw away a few batches.

Can't calibrate
I bought this thermometer 18 months ago. It was great until it lasted. The problem with this thermometer is that there's no way to recalibrate it. It suddenly started reading 115F at room temperature. Now, it's dead and there's no way to fix it

disappointed
I bought this based on reviews in Cook's Illustrated. Unfortunately I bought it AFTER I needed it last time but well before I needed again, so its been sitting in a drawer and now that I finally used it is too late to return/exchange. I bought it to use for candy making -- before even starting I found that the holes for the probe to clip on the side of the pan were not lined up well, and it was nearly impossible to get the clip onto the probe. Once I got it on, because they were not lined up well it was very difficult to get it in just the right position on the pan, and impossible to adjust further as needed once in the middle of cooking. 2nd and even more importantly, it is VERY SLOW to read a temp, and I'm skeptical that it is completely accurate -- I was suspicious about the accuracy because I just ruined a batch of caramel that burned while I was waiting for the thermometer to read 350 (it was only about 330) I tried checking by testing it in a pan of boiling water -- it seemed like it longer to get 212 than a thermometer marketed as being good for making candy, and it didn't even seem to get to 212 every time (I checked a few times). If I could return this (or at least exchange and try one more) I absolutely would!!

Versatile Probe!
I haven't used it many times yet but am pleased with all the functions and I can watch the food temperature without opening the oven door. The numbers are a good size and the unit itself is magnetic. As I have a double oven, I can attach it to the oven door at eye level, which is a bonus. This was bought at an extremely attractive sale price, as I have seen it elsewhere for double the price I paid for it.

Nice thing
I bought this as a replacement item after my first unit didn't survive being dropped into water. The original worked for many years and I expect this to do the same. Keys do get a little sticky but otherwise it's a nice little thing. I use it for temperature measurement of water, marmalade, meat, the oven... anything really

Great Product
I bought this to replace an earlier version that I have used for several years. The old one just wore out from wear and tear, so I bought an updated item from the same manufacturer. It has a few more options than my old model that I am working my way through. I use it for candy, meat but mostly for homemade bread. I wait until the bread starts to develop a crust (about 15 - 20 minutes) and then insert the probe. Set the alarm to 200F and the bread comes out perfectly baked. Prior to this, I always had trouble determining when the bread was sufficiently done.

I use this for every roast and it is very ...
I use this for every roast and it is very accurate. Remember to set it for at least 10 degrees lower than the meat temperature you want to achieve as the internal temp of the meat rises while resting.
